Jeff Sobczynski wins Hot Rod Ironman at Skyview

Second generation Western New York racer gets it done!

Jeff Sobczynski - photog Chris SimmonsTIOGA CENTER, NEW YORK (August 8, 2010)  The Joe’s Transmission TNT Super Series continues to produce very talented drivers in the incredibly competitive Hot Rod class.  Jeff Sobczynski of Depew, NY proved that when he won the IHRA Pro Am Ironman at Skyview Drags in Tioga Center, NY on August 1st.

Married to Melissa, Jeff spends his days in the space and defense division at Moog Inc in East Aurora, NY and his weekends honing his skills on the drag strip.

At Skyview, Jeff got beat in first round of Hot Rod on Saturday, so he decided to run the Gamblers race Saturday night to get some track time.  A runner-up finish gave him all he needed to figure out the track for Sunday.  That, along with an encouraging text message from mom Nancy and sister Debbie was all Jeff needed.

After qualifying 19th, Jeff had to face Jerry Stoutenberg in round one.  Lucky for Jeff that Jerry went .024 red on the tree since Jeff himself was .002 red.

Round two saw Canadian Tim Kavanagh in the other lane.  Dead even on the tree with a pair of .011 lights, Jeff ran on the good side of the index with a 7.037 for the win over Tim’s too quick 6.982.

Jeff was then set up to meet another Canadian, Mark Proulx in third round.  Jeff left first with a .009 to a .027 and took the stripe with a 7.031 to Mark’s 7.033.

In the final, Jeff had the starting line advantage with a .022 tree to Bill’s uncharacteristically late .089.  Jeff took the stripe and the event win with a 7.014 to Bill’s 7.007.

“I would like to thank my father for all his help and advice,” said Jeff after his victory.  “I would also like to thank the Joe's Transmission TNT Super Series for all the experience and JJ Jablonski’s advice – ‘if you can win at Lancaster, you can win anywhere’ he told me.”

“I also have to thank Mike, Rick and Joe at Jan Cen Motorsports, Carl Ettipio and Brian Hitchcock at Competition Transmission and Patrick James at Pro Systems for building an excellent alcohol carb,” added Jeff.

Jeff wheels a 1967 Camaro that his father Pete has owned since 1973.  Powered by a 400 cid small block Chevrolet, the car is capable of eighth mile ET’s in the 6.0 range at 112 mph.  Jeff is a second generation drag racer.  His father won himself many times including a divisional win in 1985 and a track championship at Dunn Tire Raceway Park in 1989.  Jeff took over the driving duties in 2002 and since then, they have rebuilt everything on the car, including both front and rear clips - making it a contender anywhere they go.

You can see Jeff and all the Joe's Transmission TNT Super Series racers at the Canadian Street Car Nationals, this coming weekend August 14-15 at Cayuga Dragway at Toronto Motorsports Park.  Visit www.tntsuperseries.com for complete series details.
